She resides in Hamont -Achel, Belgium.  A top 15 player in both singles and doubles, she achieved her career high singles as no 12 on 26th November 2018 and became world No 1 for the first time on 10th May 2021.

Career

  • In 2017 Elise Mertens won the Hobart International where she played against Monica Niculescu in the final. As a result of this she broke into the top 100 for the very first time in her career. This was on 16th January 2017.
  • 2017 was not a smooth journey for Mertens. However she never gave up. Despite all the lows Mertens began the 2018 season with a big bang. She became the first woman to win back to back titles in Hobart. 
  • Elise Mertens defeated Mihaela Buzarnescu in the final defending her title from 2017. 
  • Mertens also won the Doubles Title. In 2018.
  • Again in 2018 Mertens achieved her first victory over a five ranked player . Here she defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets. This made Mertens the third Belgian Woman to reach the last four at the tournament.
  • In 2019 Mertens started in Brisbane with a first round exit against top 10 player Kiki Bertens. She lost the match in three sets. 
  • Later that same year Elise Mertens got her first two wins of 2019 in Sydney by defeating Katerina Siniakova and Anett Kontaveit before losing in the quarter finals to Ashleigh Barty.
  • Mertens played the Fed cup in her home country. 
  • Later moved to Doha to play for the Qatar Open.
  • After her biggest career win till date she came back in the top 20 at No 16.
  • When the tour in August 2020 resumed Mertens lost her opening match in Palermo , but bounced back by reaching her first final of the year at Prague Open.
  • In 2022 Elise Merten won her fifteenth doubles title with Veronika Kudermetova defeating Ostapenko and Lyudmmyla Kichenok.
